Former Champion to Miss Worlds

10 August, 2007

While the men’s field for the BG Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg in September will be chock full of Olympic medallists and past champions, one well known triathlete will be missing from the fray.

Australian Peter Robertson, a three-time winner of the ITU world crown, has withdrawn from the Australian team to race the 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run elite men’s race in Germany.

The veteran triathlete has failed to recover from a recent bout of food poisoning in time to launch a serious assault on the men’s race in Hamburg.

Another top Aussie on the scratch list is 2006 world championship bronze medalist Felicity Abram, who injured her knee recently during training.

Robertson had been hoping to match UK triathlete Simon Lessing‘s all-time record of four world titles in Germany this year after winning his world crowns in 2001, 2003 and 2005.

While Robertson, who has represented his country at both the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics, will be missing, other former world champions such as New Zealander Bevan Docherty and Spaniard Ivan Rana, along with reigning champion Tim Don of the UK, will be part of one of the strongest men’s fields ever assembled.

Also racing will be a multitude of Olympic medalists, including Canadian Simon Whitfield.

Whitfield has the distinction of being the first male winner of an Olympic gold medal after his win at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.  The Canadian comes into the event with both a strong pedigree and a string of recent top results, including World Cup wins in 2007, to establish the father of one as a major contender for his first world crown.

In the lead-up to the world championships, Whitfield has won the Kitzbuhel BG World Cup in Austria and the Vancouver BG World Cup in Canada, placed third in the Salford BG World Cup, 6th in the Des Moines BG World Cup, eighth in the Ishigaki BG World Cup and 10th in the Lisbon BG World Cup in Portugal.

The BG Triathlon World Championships will be held from August 30 to September 2, 2007, and will attract over 8.000 athletes from more than 60 different nations to Hamburg.
